Marshall Ridge drives ’08 growth

By SARAH JUNEK

Despite the down economy, Keller grew faster last year than in 2007, receiving a boost from a single subdivision in the city’s northwest side.

Keller’s population grew 2.73 percent in 2008, even though the region’s growth hit a 13-year low, according to estimates released April 23 by the North Central Texas Council of Governments. The estimates are based on numbers of homes, building permits and occupancy rates in each city and county in North Texas.

Keller’s "is a pretty strong growth rate," said Duane Dankesreiter, research manager for the council. It shows "aspects of the community are still attractive" despite the recession and mortgage crisis.

Property values in Keller increase despite economic woes

By SANDRA ENGELLAND and SARAH JUNEK

Keller’s city and school district added value to their tax bases, though at a much slower rate than in years past, according to preliminary 2009 figures released Friday by the Tarrant Appraisal District.

The value of taxable property in the city rose 5.8 percent, to $4.1 billion. The school district saw a 6.9 percent gain, to $11.4 billion.

"It’s not as much as we had hoped, but it’s definitely understandable, considering the current economic conditions," said Kent Morrison, the district’s chief financial officer.

Keller ISD asks voters to OK new stadium

KELLER — With Election Day now exactly one week away, one issue on the ballot in Keller is raising eyebrows: The school district is asking taxpayers to fund a new football stadium.

With the economy sagging and expenses up, the Lowes — like many parents — are having a hard time justifying the Keller ISD's latest request.

"Education is much more important than putting it into a football stadium," said Morris Lowe.

The suburban Fort Worth school district is trying to convince voters to approve a $25.6 million bond package to build a second football stadium at Timber Creek High School. Administrators say space is running out for games as the district prepares to open its fourth high school.

Areas that Largely Avoid Spending Depression in North Texas

The North Texas economy has more than a few buffers against recession, including the Barnett Shale, steady job growth and a history of immigration.

Then there's the ultimate bulwark: consumer spending.

In November and December, when most of the country seemed tapped out, consumers and businesses went on a spending spree here.

Local sales tax collections, a proxy for retail sales and other business activity, rose by double digits in several cities in Tarrant County.

In contrast, retail sales nationwide fell in December and posted the smallest annual gain in five years.
